The Sleepy Lantern

On the cool evening of April 22, when the stars were just beginning to blink awake, a child named Nora noticed a tiny golden light dancing in the garden.

It bobbed near the flowers.

It twirled past the fence.
It floated right up to her window and tapped softly on the glass.

Tap tap tap.

Nora opened the window a crack.

Outside hovered the smallest lantern she had ever seen—no bigger than an apple, glowing warmly with flickering golden light.

Attached to its handle was a note:
For the child who needs a peaceful dream tonight.
Nora carefully carried the lantern into her room.
As soon as she set it on her nightstand, something magical happened.
The shadows in the corners softened.
The floorboards stopped creaking.
Even the wind outside seemed to whisper more quietly.

Then from the garden came a flutter of wings.

Old Mr. Finch the owl landed gently on the sill.

“That,” he said with a wise nod, “is the Sleepy Lantern.
It appears only on the twenty-second night of April.”
“What does it do?” Nora asked.
Mr. Finch blinked behind his tiny spectacles.

“It gathers worries,” he said, “and turns them into starlight.

”Nora thought about the little worries she had carried all day.
A hard spelling test.
A missing sock.
Wondering if thunder might come tonight.
She leaned close to the lantern and whispered each worry softly into its golden glow.
One by one, the worries floated inside like tiny gray feathers.
Then—poof!

They changed into sparkling silver stars.
The lantern glowed brighter than ever.
Soon, gentle beams of light drifted across Nora’s room.
Her blankets felt softer.
Her pillow felt cooler.
Her eyelids grew heavy.

“Will it stay forever?” Nora yawned.
Mr. Finch shook his head.

“No. At sunrise it returns to the sky, carrying peaceful dreams to other children.”Nora smiled, climbed into bed, and tucked herself in.The lantern swayed softly beside her like a sleepy firefly. Its warm light painted stars across the ceiling. As Nora drifted to sleep, she heard Mr. Finch call from outside:“Rest well, little dreamer.”And that night she dreamed of floating lanterns, moonlit gardens, and skies full of gentle stars.
When morning came, the lantern was gone.
Only one tiny sparkle remained on the nightstand.
Waiting quietly for next April 22.
